The LilyPad Arduino toolkit by Leah Buechley enables novices to design, engineer, and build their own electronic textiles. The tool not only lets artists and craftspeople experience computational design but also gives children (and grannies) a chance to develop longer-term interest in computing and engineering.

The new iPhone comes into it’s own. November 13, 2008
Posted by admin in : Uncategorized , add a commente new iPhone has been causing a stir for a while now but here are a few new applications that show how our conceptions of interactivity and human computer interaction are going to be seriously challenged in the next few months.
Brian Eno & Peter Chilvers Bloom
This is a really beautiful simple interface for creating minimalist sequenced music.

iPhone - Google Earth application
This technology was first shown on Jeff Han’s Multitouch Screen a couple of years ago but now it is a reality.

iHologram - iPhone application
“The application works by assuming a constant viewing angle (35-45 degrees), typical for when the device is placed on a tabletop.
The 3d scene’s perspective is then warped using anamorphic perspective, making the object appear to jump off the screen.”

iPhone Guitar 1
This is such a good idea.

iPhone Guitar 2
Another variation.

London Trip October 30, 2008
Posted by admin in : Events , add a commentThere will be a London trip on Thursday 6th November for all students. We will be going to the Science Museum and The Victoria & Albert Museum. We will be going to the Imax cinema at the Science museum which will cost you £6 with your NUS card. Entrance to the Science Museum and the V & A is free.
The Imax has Fly Me to The Moon at 15.30 which looks like it could be fun.
“In 1969 three astronauts dared to go where no man had gone before; the moon. Today, the Science Museum presents Fly Me to the Moon 3D, an animated IMAX film that will take you back to that historic moment.
With truly immersive 3D animation you will be transported deep into the action to become part of this amazing story.
Join three tween-aged flies as they sneak on board the Apollo 11 mission for an incredible space adventure. Fly Me to the Moon 3D will introduce you to space exploration and the momentous occasion when the world was united for man’s first steps on the Moon.
The Science Museum is proud to have on display the real Apollo 10 command module and a full size replica of ‘Eagle’ - the lander that took astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin to the Moon in 1969. In our Exploring Space gallery you can also find out more about how we are able to live in space – to breathe, to eat, to drink and… to go to the toilet.
So get ready to blast off to the moon and explore space yourself at the Science Museum!”
The Science Museum has a number of exhibits you will find interesting
Listening Post is a ‘dynamic portrait’ of online communication, displaying uncensored fragments of text, sampled in real-time, from public internet chatrooms and bulletin boards.
ERNIE was the first machine to generate random numbers for the Premium Bonds. Find out how he captured the public’s imagination and provides a link to Colossus, the first digital electronic computer.
Imagine, invent, adapt; use, reuse, recycle. An exhibition exploring the first century of plastics.
Remember Tomorrow’s World? Well, science film and TV goes back much further, to 1903. This show traces the major science documentary genres and opens up an archive of the most dramatic examples.
The Victoria & Albert Museum around the corner has a fantastic range of free exhibits plus Cold War Modern which is £5 entry for students.

The World Beach project also looks interesting.
